Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What should I bring to my first appointment?
To help us make the most of your consultation, please bring:
- Your medical aid card and ID
- A GP referral letter (if applicable)
- Copies of recent investigations: blood tests, colonoscopies, CT, MRI, or X-rays
- A list of your current medications and allergies
- A list of questions or concerns you’d like to discuss — I value your voice in your care
What happens during the first consultation?
In our first meeting, I will:
- Take a detailed medical history
- Perform a physical and, if needed, a digital rectal examination
- Discuss your symptoms, diagnosis, and any previous treatments
- Recommend additional investigations (such as imaging, blood work, or a colonoscopy) if necessary
This is your time — ask anything. I’ll ensure you leave with a clear understanding of the next steps.
Do I need a referral to make an appointment?
While a referral isn’t always required, many medical aids do need one. More importantly, it ensures your care is coordinated, especially if you’ve already seen a GP or another specialist.
Does your practice ensure patient privacy?
Absolutely. As a doctor and a woman, I understand the sensitive nature of colorectal conditions. Our team respects your dignity and privacy at every stage, and we strictly comply with the POPI Act to protect your personal information.
How do I schedule an appointment?
You can call our rooms at 011-014 4525 to book a consultation. My friendly administrative team will guide you through what’s needed.
How do I prepare for surgery?
Depending on the procedure, you may need to:
- Undergo pre-operative tests (bloods, ECG, imaging)
- Follow a special diet or take bowel prep
- Pause certain medications
- Quit smoking and avoid alcohol for 4+ weeks before surgery
I will give you detailed, personalised preparation instructions well ahead of time.
Will I need to stop eating before surgery?
Yes — typically, you’ll need to fast for at least 6 hours before your surgery. If bowel preparation is needed, we will give you clear instructions.
Should I stop my medications before surgery?
Some medications (e.g., blood thinners, diabetic meds, NSAIDs) may need to be paused. Always bring a complete list of all medications and supplements. I’ll let you know what’s safe to continue.
Who arranges pre-authorisation with medical aid?
Patients are responsible for arranging pre-authorisation. We will provide all necessary ICD10 and procedure codes to assist you. Please note, any shortfall between medical aid cover and actual cost is the patient’s responsibility.
How long will I stay in hospital after surgery?
It depends on your diagnosis, general health, and the type of surgery (e.g., open, laparoscopic, robotic). Some procedures are done as day cases, while others may require several nights in hospital. I’ll give you a clear idea based on your plan.
What should I expect immediately after surgery?
You’ll be closely monitored in recovery before moving to the ward or being discharged home (depending on your procedure). ERAS protocols are followed to:
- Reduce pain
- Promote early eating and mobilisation
- Shorten your hospital stay safely
How will my pain be managed?
I use a multimodal pain strategy aligned with the WHO pain ladder, which reduces reliance on strong opioids and helps you recover more comfortably. Your pain plan will be tailored to your procedure and needs.
When can I eat after surgery?
We follow ERAS principles, which support earlier reintroduction of food where appropriate. Your diet will be progressed step by step, depending on your surgery and how your body responds.
Do I need to take time off work after surgery?
Yes. Recovery time varies depending on the procedure, but I’ll provide a sick note and guidance on when it’s safe to return to work or other activities.
Will I need follow-up appointments?
Yes. Follow-up is an essential part of your recovery. We will schedule post-operative visits to monitor healing, review any test results, and adjust your care plan as needed.
What should I do in case of an emergency?
If you experience an urgent complication (e.g., severe bleeding, fever, pain, or wound problems), please go immediately to your nearest emergency department.
During office hours, call my rooms at 011-014 4525. If we can assist or coordinate further care, we will do so promptly.
Do you treat both benign and cancer conditions?
Yes. I offer comprehensive care for colorectal cancer, as well as benign conditions such as:
- Hemorrhoids
- Fistulas
- Fissures
- Pilonidal disease
- Pelvic floor disorders
- Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
Are minimally invasive and robotic options available?
Yes. I am trained in laparoscopic surgery and am furthering my expertise in robotic-assisted colorectal procedures. These techniques often offer less pain, shorter hospital stays, and quicker recovery.
Final Note from Me
